Plain answers.
Short explanations of how DutyVAT estimates customs duty, import VAT, national handling rules, and marketplace parcel costs.
About DutyVAT.
What is DutyVAT, exactly?
DutyVAT is a customs-cost calculator for shoppers ordering goods from outside the EU. It estimates duty, VAT, and modeled national handling rules before a parcel reaches the door.
Is it really free?
Yes. The calculator is free to use and does not require an account. DutyVAT may later add optional editorial products, but the basic estimate stays free.
Do I need an account?
No. You can calculate a parcel without logging in, uploading a receipt, or storing your cart with us.
Are you affiliated with Temu, Shein, or AliExpress?
No. DutyVAT is independent and is not affiliated with any marketplace, carrier, customs broker, or national customs authority.
The math.
What changed on July 1, 2026?
The EU removed the EUR 150 customs-duty exemption for low-value goods. Import VAT already applied, and the temporary EUR 3 customs duty now applies per tariff-classified goods-item line, subject to the official exclusions and declaration rules.
How is duty calculated under the new rule?
The temporary measure is EUR 3 per tariff-classified goods-item line for low-value distance sales, not per parcel and not per physical unit. Official customs guidance says the rule applies across IOSS, Special Arrangements, and standard VAT routes, with specific exclusions for some preferential-trade or customs-union declarations. The current calculator does not collect those declaration details, so it does not add the temporary duty automatically.
Why does VAT apply on goods plus duty?
Import VAT is generally calculated on the customs value plus customs duty and related import costs. DutyVAT shows that order line by line so the estimate is auditable.
What about IOSS sellers?
IOSS can allow VAT to be collected at checkout, but it does not erase customs duty where duty is due. Larger marketplaces or sellers may collect VAT, duty, or customs-related amounts before dispatch; carrier clearance or national fees may still depend on the route and procedure.
Are there any exemptions left?
Some special cases may exist, but DutyVAT is designed for ordinary consumer parcels. Always verify edge cases with the carrier or customs authority.
Countries and HS codes.
Which countries are supported today?
The English country set covers Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Sweden, Romania, and the United States reference page.
What is an HS code?
An HS code is a customs product classification. DutyVAT uses product descriptions and country data to map common items to the closest tracked heading.
What if my item does not match any keyword?
Use the closest category or check the official tariff database. DutyVAT is an estimate and cannot replace a binding customs classification.
Your data.
Do you store my cart?
No account is required, and the calculator is designed so ordinary parcel details do not need to become a user profile.
Do you track me?
DutyVAT avoids account-based tracking. See the privacy page for the exact services and retention rules.
